ANALYSIS AND VULNERABILITY OF WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS FOR POTENTIAL POLLUTION PHENOMENA CONTROL

The research project falls within the theme of intersectoral safety for disaster risks reduction and resilience, whose goal is to define effective methods and strategies for assessing, managing and improving safety and resilience. The water distribution system (WDS) safety and resilience are strictly related to its qualitative and quantitative vulnerability, which depends on the conditions of the network, the environment in which it is located and its topology.
The aim of the research project is to create an integrated nonlinear simulation/optimization model which firstly assesses the vulnerability of an existing distribution network, and then defines which interventions are the best to be implemented in order to reduce its vulnerability.
PROGRESS OF THE ACTIVITIES
The research project is in collaboration with CAFC Spa, which provided the data on the Udine water distribution network. The first aim is to assess the qualitative and quantitative vulnerability of the network. It was therefore necessary to model the network in its current state, using the software EPANET, in order to perform qualitative and quantitative simulations. In addition to the simulations, from the model it is possible to extrapolate the network topology, through which an analysis of the resilience and vulnerability of the network was carried out based on the theory of graphs and complex networks. Based on the topological characteristics of the network, a water network partitioning was carried out by clustering the network nodes using community structure algorithms.
